Is A ‘One Malaysian Race’ Out Of Reach?

In 1991, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad described his Vision 2020, or Wawasan 2020, of a fully-developed and united nation. But today, racial divisions seem to have deepened with communal politics and entrenched affirmative action based on race. Is the dream of a 'bangsa Malaysia' or one Malaysian race still possible? Insight talks to former Minister Rais Yatim, Deputy Minister Hannah Yeoh, and economic adviser Dr Muhammed Abdul Khalid, among others.
The programme Insight investigates and analyses topical issues that impact Asia and the rest of the world. Watch the full episode here: cna.asia/2Pdpg6f

To say One Malaysian Race is like saying One American Race. There is just no such race as American race or Malaysian race. As long as people respect each other regardless of religious difference or racial difference, then a country or even the world will be peaceful.

For many or majority of Malaysians the ideology of Untuk Agama, Bangsa dan Negara comes to mind (meaning for Our Religion, Race and Country) ... since before independence this country is made up of various races, the citizens are multi-religious and speak various languages ... maybe ppl put priority in their own religion or race before the country because in this ideology the country (negara) comes 3rd place after religion and race.

Looking through the comments below, when talking about the concept of 'One Malaysia', the only provoking issue talked about is the 'vernacular' schools - why? How did it affect the unity of the country? Vernacular schools have the same syllabus as the national schools, same aspiration, similar goals that's to produce good citizen to the country. The only difference is, vernacular schools are doing it either in Chinese or Tamil language, only the language is different, so, what's the problem guys? Moreover, I have been a teacher before in national schools and I know how the Chinese and Indian students are treated when come to selection for scholarships, taking part in sponsored competitions, i.e., school debates, sports, etc., One or next to none will be selected even though the Chinese or Indian students fulfil the requirements - open discrimination which still exist but no one question it or talk about? Why? So, what's wrong with the parents sending their children to schools which will see children as children and not as Chinese or Indian? 'One Malaysia' is easily achievable by simply instilling HUMANITY than race or religion! I'm proud to say I've left the ministry because it was against my principle to watch and see students from the minority suffer due to the discrimination, which was disgusting - I have left the country for good! Good luck, Malaysia!!!

Nak jadi 1 bangsa malaysia? Semua identiti bangsa yang bukan Melayu harus dibuang. Tak boleh celebrate Chinese New Year. Tak boleh cakap bahasa selain Malay or English. Tak boleh berpakaian traditional China or India. Tak boleh celebrate Thaipusam. Tak boleh namakan anak nama China/India. Nama keluarga Cina/India kena buang. Selagi tak buat benda tu memang tak akan jadi 1 bangsa. So ask your self. Are u willing to do all that? Nak minta belajar tulisan tradisi Jawi pon sampai nak mengamuk gila. Bahasa melayu pon tidak fasih and refuse to use. How to be one?

As a Malay in economic view what i can tell this is a product of our history during colonial time where they (the penjajah) separates 3 race in a very efficient way for more then hundred of year. where malay at the sawah padi, indian at the estate and chinese in the city. the Malay after independence, all the animosity with other races on the unfair treatment in their own land during the colonial time makes them distrustful of other races and want to be superior. from there born the current policy Malay first. As for the chinese and indian they were left with their own device with minimal support from the government after couple of generations they also start with the racial games Chinese or indian first. fun notes During P Ramlee and Sudirman time there were less racial animosity as this two big malaysian figure promotes race equality in their arts.

Having said that, we’re also need to take into account of special privileges provided for the bumiputra, such as UiTM, MARA and so on. This special privilege also, in one way or another contributes to the racial segregation as well. Nothing against bumiputra, since I am one myself but I do understand non-bumis frustration of being ‘sidelined Malaysian’. Personally, I have nothing against vernacular schools, I have many good friends who was brought up with the system. Granted they are typical DAP supporters and occasionally questioned bumiputra privilege, right for UEC and Muslim country status, but I take it as it is their freedom of expression and we’re still good buddies. My point is, if they have to deal with bumiputra privilege, then I see no reason for us not to tolerate vernacular schools.

Allow Muslims to be free to make a choice to leave islam or marry or convert or whatever. Allow non Muslims to preach, propagate and practice their religion in the same way Islamists can. Until then this constitution is equivalent to slow genocide. And bhumiputras can get reservations to smaller extent let's say maybe 10 percent because merit plays important role in society's development.

We did not see race, religion or language as barriers because we all learnt English, Malay, Mandarin and tiny bits of Tamil. And the writing - Traditional Chinese, Tulisan Jawi as well. Once we got to college we could see the SMK/SMJK graduates only wanting to hang out with their own race or religion. While we... didn’t care because we respect each other’s differences and look at our similarities like hobbies, interests... etc.

What a contradictory views portrayed and actual things happen in Malaysia. Before this so called progressive government “PH” took over, the racial tension was not as high as it is currently. People lived harmoniously. The concept of 1Malaysia has somehow unified Malaysian as one. Malay/Muslims rights are honoured and the other races respect each other. Factors contributing disharmony among races in Malaysia lies in the leadership at the highest level. Rivalry of power between cabinet, between internal parties, Islamophobic statements by ministers, slow economy, unqualified minister(a university dropouts in culinary is our defence minister), false promises and many more. Dr Rais Yatim mentioned in the video, to make Satu Bangsa Malaysia, it need to be constituted. Funny when Malays and Muslims constituted rights are being denied, called backwards and racist. The only thing can help to create a truly Bangsa Malaysia fall hugely on education and school system. Malaysia need to stop to maintaining all race majority funded based school and integrate it as one. This is the only solution.

Race mean a group of people who share the same genetic and physical features. Obviously there will be no such thing as malaysia race since we all have different genetic and physical features and that is okay because diversity in physical features and culture is what make us unique. The term "race" that we used to divide malaysian is actually about social construct or class status. Malay class refer to Austronesian speaker who are Muslim, Dayak class refer to Austronesian speaker who are not Muslim in Sarawak, orang asli refer to primitive pagan in peninsular, India class for anyone who have ancestor from south Asia, and so on. If a person who are "Malay race" but convert to other religions, he will lose his Malay status class and become raceless. The government decided what race are u, not yourself. This " race " system was created by the British and continue by our government till this day. Instead of fighting on creating one race like what Nazi German try to do before, we should fighting on one Malaysia nationalism which obviously we lack of that. Nationalism is needed for country creation as it unite people from different race, ethnicity, religion etc. U can't have malaysia nationalism when the government still practicing bumiputra privilege and view Chinese, Indian and peranakan as immigrants eventhough some of them have been here for more then 400 years and we can't have malaysia nationalism when we still have secular school that still glorified their ancestors nationalistic and refused to speak national language. Both side need to trust and work with each other. We are far more behind compare to neighbors country on achieving nationalism.

By abolishing race based school, student will integrate among themselves at young age. After several years, young people no longer see someone based on race but see them as their friends. As malaysian. Then, you can start to give non malay equal opportunity in university entrance and others.

I think the issue is more than sjkc. I went to normal school but there is still race division. Sure we can abolish sjkc and other non national based school but it would cause more racial tension. Instead, we should teach the younger gen to accept each other as Malaysian. How can we become a Malaysian race if there are people still arguing about simple things like Jawi script, religious differences and status?

@B.W makanya tolong cermati komen saya yg pertama, Melayu menyambut para pendatang dan memberi mereka kebebasan selama hak2 dan kedaulatan Melayu tidak diganggu. Sistem negara mereka itu Kerajaan yg ada Raja2 Melayu nya, otomatis org2 Melayu disana adalah tuan tanah, sama dgn Yogyakarta skrg yg ga boleh org luar (cina) punya tanah disana... see ?? Toh, dgn sistem ketuanan Melayu dr awal merdeka sampai skrg terbukti sukses kok,, rakyat tentram, ekonomi maju.

@Rxx x lmao most of your statements are stupid and judgementally ignorant. You chose to say things without actual solid proof. Goverment schools aren't any better than just going to a basic school and teaching you basic stuff. Think about it... in a Chinese school, they teach you 3 languages instead of the 2 basic English and Malay. I'm not gonna include Arab cuz... only Muslims learn that. Other religions aren't included for that class usually. And as far as I remember, I don't think anyone actually gotten high marks in their arab back in my school. And also I had a friend who's a Malay girl who's father sent her to a Chinese school instead of our average sk. In highschool she was one of the smartest person I've ever known. But... yea... now she's studying medicine in university. So as you could probably tell... my opinion is that... I actually agree with these guys. Most people I met who are smart were students from a Chinese school. Kinda weird but not at the same time. I mean the Chinese School (that was right infront of my highschool) was obviously well funded. Big and had many advantages over my highschool. Bigger fields, bigger halls, bigger building and also their field was so big they had a spectator seating on the side. The nice football stadium type of seats with a roof. Unlike my highschool which was always underfunded 😂

@Rxx x 1st you accused me of being a double standard person of not looking at SA but I have already informed you I am not well informed of SA to comment about it. But I am well versed about SG's education system as I was in it for over 40 years. Then you mention I care for myself and not others care to point out where? If you are suggesting me opting for a better education instead of sacrificing for a sub par system anybody would do that not just me. I think you are the double standard person here for not admitting your racist government education system and policies and keep pointing at other as racist with no proof.

There will never be a “one” Malaysia race because the very word “Malay” is a race it is an indigenous ethnic race of people since beginning of recorded history and the policies will always favour ethnic "Bumiputra" Malays. An Ang Moh Malaysian or Chinese Malaysian or Indian Malaysian as much as you want there to be is because of convenience of nationality and not race equality. Islam and Ethnic Malay will always be inseparable and have priority and if, DSAI becomes the next PM , being a hardcore muslim, may impose harsh syariah law on all citizens including amputations, stoning and public caning and for muslim apostates - beheading. These, will never change.

Being an Indian I cannot comment much on Malaysia. The fact being we have similar kind of politics and social issues in India as well. Caste based, region based, religion based politics everywhere. But I pray that Malaysia would sort out all it's issues and work on development path. Or else it would be tough in future when rest if the ASEAN countries and running way ahead of you.
