## CNA | Talking Point | E32: Are PSLE maths papers too difficult?

PSLE mathematics papers have been a thorn in the side of some parents who claim they are just too tough for 12 year olds. But are they really? Are students being adequately prepared for such questions? Talking Point finds out.

These are rlly too hard. Espiecially when i took it in 2019

I’m p4 and I realise most of them were P3 p4 question The fig1 Fig2 Fig3 Fig4 Is learnt in p4 I Guess we forget

lo mas interesante que vi en mi vida

I think the problem is that they r too stress and cannot focus during the questions, honestly the questions were doable, u just need to read properly , I used highlighters for the semi circle question and it helped me so much ! But I did try some of the past year psle questions given by my teacher , gotta admit the ribbon question was hard , all of my classmates (EVEN ME) , got it wrong and the number of times the teacher explained to us we couldn’t understand it

I don’t even understand a single thing

😵😨😱🤭🥶 what in the world

Me, A* for math and science for his year. Laughs as I goes to A levels, in a top school. The question given is really quite easy. Sure it is a Sec 1 question, but it is thought in class. The question was actually really quite simple and easy. Sitting through the exam, I wasn’t surprised when I saw the question. That year wasn’t too hard, the re wasn’t any simultaneous equation questions, except for the 5 semicircle question, which wasn’t too hard. I don’t know about other schools but my school and math teacher thought me well and thought us good methods to tackle these “difficult” questions. All you need, is the basics and foundations of the topics and learn to apply these knowledge. I really love mathematics and found that math isn’t hard at all. Good luck to the next group of people taking the math PSLE. If you need any help, you can talk to your Teachers to correct any misunderstandings or understand a topic better. 😄😁😆😃😀😀😄😁😃

People now are going foundation math so it's easier lol

ribbon question is 9 rolls

Watching this reminds me of how I screwed up my paper. It wasn't difficult, it was really simple, I just couldn't find the method.

That’s right, PSLE is just a stepping stone kids, your future is still bright even if PSLE didn’t go as you wanted it to go !!! :)

They featured my school Shuqun xia I so happy

Bruh, just focus in class and think outside the box when solving a question you're not familiar with. I'm pretty sure the teachers have gone through multiple questions like these. I didn't study and still managed to do good for my PSLE. Well I imagine if I had studied I would of done better.

Its dumb, how people practice for PSLE... Just don't bother about good school lol

i am aiming for 286

HAHAHHAAHAHAHA AT 7:07 I SAW 'JAMES CHARLES' ON THE WHITEBOARD!! 😂😂

Let it be. Ur employer or even ur future client or business partner won't ask u how u performed in ur PSLE maths or even ur PSLE or even which branded Sec sch u went. Let the child grow to be a person with values who respects self, parents and others who's able to face challenges head on n doesnt give up is more significant thn getting them perform in sch n lose their childhood with elitist attitudes tht they embrace from their competitive parents. At the end of the day, we r just breeding elitism in our society. At the end of the day, these students will struggle in the real world coz there are no tutors who will guide them in the working or business or simply the real world. Too dependent on spoon feeding with solution through tuition sessions. Anyway, it's a bell curve results. Pro rated for everyone 🤭. Why the big fuss...

Fun fact, my teacher told my that there are some sec 4 questions.

8:58 since no one has pointed this out, i shall. If any person, student or not, can solve part b which requires knowing how to find an arithmetic sum (apart from brute force), how does part c require a more advanced concept? It's just converting a fraction to percentage form.

It's quite difficult if many PSLE questions wind up on the mindyourdecisions channel, which is by no means a math channel for those who are just trying to keep up with their primary school work.

$1:80 for the each egg tarts

Qns 4: 36 cm for diameter that was not hard, Ribbon is 10 rolls of the 25 meters.

1:54 ... isnt it (16+22+22)-(12+12) ? cuz like 2 diameters of circle will leave 60 behind and 3 diameters will leave 24 behind so if u add 1 more diameter to the bottom part which is the 2 diameters it will become 24 which means that 1 diameter is 60-24 which is 36..... right?

3:40 isnt it 9 rolls?

Nope. At least for me last year (2018) it was pathetically easy. And PSLE dosent matter. O’lvl and A’lvl matter more.

That is what schools are for

its okay guys, i got C for psle math and A1 for Olevel math

Students in Singapore are taught to learn via rote memorization, which does not stimulate creativity - either that or they are simply lack the mental faculties required for divergent thought, which is true for majority of the population. Perhaps MOE should introduce a system whereby the students who are able to solve the questions requiring creativity are recognized by secondary schools for their creativity. Singapore needs creativity, or rather, genius. Every year we have plenty of students participating in International Math and Science Olympiads, but virtually none of them make any significant academic contributions. Furthermore, the top one percent of students with corresponding IQ's of 132 and above are put in the GEP Program, and the top 0.004th of students with IQ's of 160 (S.D 15 scale) and above - if they are identified quickly before they become disillusioned with the system, of course - are basically allowed to learn at their own pace. However, have you ever heard of a Singaporean winning a Nobel Prize in the Sciences? Or a Fields Medal? Me neither. This is because Singapore remains as a highly collectivist society, where students are taught to be cogs- in-machines from a very young age. My point is that Singapore needs to select the students based on ability, not test grades, and groom them from a young age to become leading scientists in their fields. Either that or we resort to a eugenics program.

The MOE needs a reminder that these kids are just 12 year olds and some family can't afford fancy tution

@filthyTrash Honestly, the whole thing was greatly exaggerated. The paper was not that difficult, plus if it is too easy then everyone will do well and the best cannot excel. Plus, who says you need tuition? I never received tuition but yet did ok i feel.

How will Singapore pride itself with top tier education if the exams are easy?

No money for tuition lah

Just study lol... not like psle is the hardest exam you are ever going to take

i got the last grade before U grade and all i can say is , " lets blame math ,"

Bruh imagine crying to an exam paper. Looked at the qns as a Sec 1 n it’s extremely easy :\

1:53 I was bored so I solved it Let the diameter of the circle be x and set an expression for the length of the line for both sides: x+12+x+12+x 22+x+16+x+22 Since they share the same line, we can set them equal to each other: x+12+x+12+x=22+x+16+x+22 12+12+x=22+16+22 24+x=60 x=36 The diameter of the circle is 36 If I did something wrong, sorry!

Imagine

phew i live in malaysia

Me who got an A for PSLE math 🤔

A totally not very American-like education system.

lol those kids cant solve cos they not meant for express stream what, cmi say cmi la. Not like dont have kids scoring 240 above liddat lmao

at least I got an A oop

at least I got an A oop

All the questions except the circle r easy for me

For some questions, i.e. the weight of 6 $1 coins, I would not think I'll be able to solve it back then when I was 12 years old. But now, the answer to the questions seem all too logical.

## Fez

## 2 muaj më parë

Yes, around the same difficulty level, they won't change anything much. Good luck for your PSLE!

I am weird I felt that paper 2 wasn't that hard (Note: i took the paper this year)

## 3 muaj më parë

Because why would PSLE be hard?

PSLE math is SUPER easy when i did it in sch anywyas

14:24 you haven't paid yet

I got the last question correct, but it took me like 20 minutes to solve it. The second last question I was like ‘screw it’ and randomly wrote stuff. The last question was okay coz i go for math olympiad, but I don’t bother listening. I’m pretty sure I got like 85 for math and science and 91 for english. With like 60 for MT, haha.

15.07 ohhh it was part of the paper, and yeah, alot of us got 40 and 1.80. That was fairly simple tho

The semi circle one is ez cuz a lot of students over think it. But the pattern one Is hard for p6 students. Not impossible but just hard. But when u reach Sec 1, you will learn how to easily solve the pattern within 1 min! So it's okay if u can't solve it now! You will eventually learn it!

You guys should try the European competences, the guidelines are aimed to improve student's life and competences so they can improve and keep learning. The best one is called Learn to Learn where it looks for the student's own personal growth

@Enslaved singaporean its a common regulatory policy that every school across the EU should follow, it's a loosely held legislation, but it does the trick. In certain countries it's not enough but it's aimed not only to raise perfect A students but also students that know how to balance work and personal

i passed the psle maths HAHAH i’m so proud of myself

no.

They should totally make it easy and super manageable next year. Then, the parents will regret because there is something called bellcurve.

Think about it, there are only max 1-2 hard questions that’s require out of the box thinking, this is to separate the smart from the smarter students. The other questions are usually well practiced before-hand. Furthermore, even if it is true that a certain question is really difficult, the psle scoring system works in a way where your marks are pit against other pupil’s marks around Singapore, which means that no matter how tough questions are, your marks depend on how you perform as compared to your peers. Parents need to understand how the t-score system works and why papers must have varying difficulty levels.

Yes they are because I got less than 250 for psle

I got a 82 for the Prelims and for the 2019 PSLE Paper, I got A* for Mathematics

## Enslaved singaporean

Let's say that like 10 times and see if we can get an A

2015: coin question 2017: ribbon question 2019: semicircle question 2016 and 2018: no controversial question so 2020’s paper *may* not be that bad

i think most p6 struggled with the second last circles question. i lost all my brain cells trying the read the question

Students should be hoping for a harder math paper

2018 psle paper not so bad, I expected a star or a, got a The Percentage of grey triangles is hard for me, I am sec 1 now

The real question is: do spending on expensive tuition and stressing students with tight schedule even helpful, when hardest questions are so "daily day basis"?

## Fez

## 2 muaj më parë

I feel like, yes, it does help to have tuition to *SOME* extent, but if it is too frequent or the parents put too much stress on them, then the students will most definitely do worse than they could have.
